About the performance:
Myth is a choreographic duet inspired by the ancient greek story of Eurydice and Orpheus. The performance does not illustrate the story but exposes the myth - is the man the head and the woman a heart? To promise each other endless love is like to get "chained". We are living in a chain of being dependent from others. Complicated variations of movement without loosing contact create the illusion of two bodies that move as one. Are they still able to move together without losing contact - when the tempo of life is increasing and everything is getting more complicated? Does the promise of endless love make us weak and vulnerable? After the dissapearing of Eurydice,Orpheus lost his had completely. He was desperate when she vanished. When he found her, he could not keep his head together and looked back. Myth is an abstract but symbolistic performance that researches the answers for the questions like: Are we really born free or are we living in a chain of being? What is the underworld? Maybe the underworld is the freedom because we are not chained to anybody?
A couple who narrates dance Myth. Authors and dancers Nastja Bremec and Michal Rynia. Producers M&N Dance Company, Der Gouvernrstraat (Rotterdam, the Netherlands), Cankarjev dom. 12th January 2012, Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana, 55 min.
How much is a tender touch, a yearning look, a passionate embrace and finally a demolished wall, which allows your partner into the depths of your being, worth? The staging of the palette of emotions that reach into different spheres of a love relationship by the excellent dancers and choreographers Nastja Bremec and Michal Rynia was impressive and mature. After their first project Dust in the Wind (an all-evening project as well), in which their outstanding innovativeness filled the audience with enthusiasm, the couple continues to reinforce their elaborate concept. The present performance is likewise marked by creativity, original dance interpretations and flawless technique.
The artists found the starting point for their recent project in the ancient Greek myth about Orpheus and Eurydice and transferred it into the contemporary and chaotic world. Man represents the head, while woman represents the heart. Their dance narrates the same story – he is more rational, she is more emotional. He invites her into his emotional space; she shies away from him. When she finally gives in and enters the invisible circle he offers her, the chain is bound. The sensual dance of two lovers with the constant joining of the bodies symbolically represents two souls that become one. The performance shows in the first part the romantic union of an innocent girl and a boy in love; in the second part it presents a more mature phase of the relationship. She follows him as a shadow all the time. Dramatic moments and conflicts appear, which trigger off questions about dependency, entrapment, the search for freedom and the yearning for tender feelings of attachment. The scenography (a work by Staško Marinič) – the wall of hanging chains instantly slides off the ceiling. The wall between them is demolished.
The movement of the two co-authors and performers is enhanced by the expressiveness of the music by the duo Silence. The original fusion of modern dance, classical ballet and hip-hop effectively portrays female and male emotions. The more delicate female soul is expressed through various elements of modern dance techniques, in contrast to the male emotional world, which is depicted through different elements of hip-hop (Rynia, five times world champion in hip-hop, demonstrates all his acrobatic abilities). Their elaborate movements together with changing dynamics create diverse atmospheres. The two dancers continue to astound with the amount of innovative dance interpretations that enforce different emotions and illustrate the narrative. The dramaturgy by Dave Schwab draws the bow throughout the performance, which finally returns to the beginning – or possibly not: he offers her again to join in the relationship; however, it is on her to decide – will she accept or refuse?
Fifty-five minutes means a long period of time in dance, as it is extremely difficult to keep the performance interesting all the time; the Slovene-Pole duo, however, managed it excellently for the second time now. The choreography is also interesting for its details, therefore a stronger light was missing at times, which would emphasize them (the lighting is Dennis Vooren’s work).
Nastja Bremec and Michal Rynia both graduated at Rotterdam Dance Academy CODARTS. For some time they were members of the Dutch group Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. Now they work as dancers, choreographers and teachers in Slovenia and abroad in the framework of their own M&N Dance Company. Their leading principle is institualization of their dance company and we can only wish (in addition to EnKnapGroup) for another professional contemporary dance group.
